Classic handbags are one style that help fulfill my need for ever more purses (and shoes, I’ll admit). There are worse things than being a purse-a-holic. I tell myself that every time I go shopping! For my purposes here it might be easier to define this type of handbag by what it’s NOT – rather than what it is.
It’s not “in your face” loud and obnoxious.
It’s not garish.
It’s not cracked and peeling plastic.
It doesn’t have vulgar words imprinted on it.
It doesn’t have cartoon characters in full color decorating it.
It doesn’t have two tons of metal or plastic lapel pins permanently attached to it.
It usually doesn’t have a baby bottle pocket (But often that particular add-on can be improvised from a larger cell phone pocket).
Is not stodgy and time-worn.
Is not held together with safety pins, paper clips or rubber bands
While I don’t pretend to limit myself to only classic handbags, I do feel that this style is one that all women, young, middle-aged and older all need to pay attention to. While there are times when some of the above mentioned “styles” might be fun (Halloween) or appropriate (you tell ME when vulgarities on a handbag are appropriate!), I much prefer to carry a purse that reflects my own style and demeanor – not someone else’s. Be wary of trying to follow to closely the fashion trends of Hollywood movie stars and the latest rock bands. You might just get lost in the vast arena of “handbag gotta haves”! A few things that classic handbags can/should be are:
Classy – appealing to the widest range of women
Clean lines to draw attention
Contemporary look and feel
Upscale and Modern
Often practical (but that’s not necessarily required!)
Hi Tech manufacturing
Is Durable
Has Fine detailing
Can be almost any color, texture and overall style.
Is meant to enhance your clothing – not detract from it.
